THE NEW FORTIFICATIONS

( On 1438 - on 1444)

IN the XV-TH CENTURY, OF PANAT COMES TO LIVE COUPIAC

Until the construction of their Coupiac's castle, the viscounts of Panat had as main home, their Peyrebrune's castle. But Peyrebrune's climate should be rigorous during winter. The village around the castle emptied bit by bit, for the benefit of Villefranche-de-Panat. The climate and the isolation incited maybe the Lords of Panat to reconstruct their Coupiac's castle to make(do) a more comfortable house of it, in a sweeter climate and with a denser population and in extension.

In XVI-th and XVII-th centuries, we see of Panat, become Castelpers-Panat, asking in their will that their body is buried in the grave of their ancestors, in the church of Our Lady de Massiliergues. The desire of burial to Coupiac, shows well the affection which they had for Coupiac's place of residence.

CONSTRUCTION OF AN OUTER WALL STRENGTHENS IN 1438

We know that during the One hundred years war, several villages of the canton were occupied by the English for a while. It was the case, for example , of our most close neighbours: Sailing in 1834 and Montclar in 1387.

Coupiac was it(he) busy?

It seems likely, but we have no document confirming it. However, we know that, the ended war, long-distance lorry drivers or tramps, various and unemployed men at arms, broke out on the region, sowing(scattering) the terror and the ruin on their passage.

In 1372, one inquiry made(done) by Pierre de Garric, notary of the county of Rodez, brings back(reports) that 70 men at arms tried to take Coupiac on @ May 14. The enemy attacked(affected) before the sun gets up, crosses(exceeds) the fence surrounding the village and reached(affected) the door of the low yard of the castle (current door of the castle).

That's why, in front of this painful situation, the property managers of Coupiac asked, in the name of the inhabitants of the community, to the Lord Louis de Panat, the license to build a surrounding wall(speaker) strengthened around the village, inside which they could take refuge with their personal properties in case of necessity.

Being seen the seriousness of the reasons called by the property managers, the Lord accepts their demand and the plan of the surrounding wall(speaker) is established, to be realized in five years. The plan foresees the exact place of walls, doors and tours(towers). It(he) was realized to complete the fortifications of the city, the Lord of Panat, in 1441 , donated the 26-golden ecu sum; and, in 1444 , of 50 golden sheeps.
